Profile

As architects, our role is to create great buildings that work well, are cost-effective and are a pleasure to use. We aim to design buildings that integrate with their context and maximise their potential, bringing delight to their users and the surrounding community.

We work closely alongside our clients, to develop their brief and gain a thorough understanding of their aims and aspirations. The building design will evolve in response to the brief, an analysis of their context and an exploration of space, light and materials.

We enjoy the simplicity and craft of making architecture, believing that coherent and modest buildings, with an integrated sustainable approach, will stand the test of time. We strive to provide buildings that are both appropriate and inspiring inside and out. Quality underpins all that we do.

Evans McDowall Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice based in Lincoln. Established in 2018, by founding directors, Alan Evans and Andy McDowall, we work on projects throughout the UK. Our clients are diverse: from individual homeowners to Higher & Further Education providers and major international organisations. The work of the practice ranges from architecture, interior design and conservation to planning, technical design and consultation.

Sustainability

Sustainability is important to us both as individuals and as a practice and is one of the key challenges facing architects today. There is a need for a greater emphasis on sustainability in the built environment and responsibility for what we create today along with its impact not only on us but also on future generations. This is why our practice is dedicated to finding environmentally sound solutions whilst striving to create beautiful designs.

Our approach to sustainable building is a ‘back to basics’ one.  It puts localism and natural products at the forefront of importance.  We want our buildings to stand for hundreds of years.  The building should make use of recycled materials, and naturally occurring or locally produced materials where possible.  Materials are considered for their longevity in use and the ability to be recycled at the end of their life cycle.

We design buildings that are inherently sustainable, developing solutions that provide effective long term results. We seek to use passive systems and a low energy approach and aspire to achieve net-zero carbon architecture. While there is a requirement for technological systems within this approach we believe that in order to achieve true sustainability an ‘all encompassing’ and thoughtful approach needs to be taken.  This approach needs to give consideration to all elements of the construction of buildings.

We have experience with ground & air-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, solar thermal panels, along with heat-recovery ventilation systems.
